The Best Hidden Photo Spot in Burano, Italy

Wondering where people take those photos in front of the colourful houses? At this point, you’re likely aware that they are on the island of Burano, near Venice, Italy, but that is only the start. We have done the work for you and found the best hidden photo spot in Burano without the crowds. This post will explain how to get to Burano, when is the best time to visit, and the #1 hidden photo spot in Burano, Italy.

What is the Island of Burano Famous for?

In addition to being known for its colourful homes and buildings, Burano is also known for its lace. In the 16th century, Burano lace became famous, and in the 1800s, the first school of lace was created in Burano.

When to Visit Burano, Italy?

Time of Year

Venice and Burano are extremely busy over the summer months (June-August). Because of this, we think the best time to visit is in the shoulder months (April/May and September/October). While still an amazing city in winter, Venice now gets some snow, so we wouldn’t recommend visiting then!

Time of Day

As with most tourist attractions, start EARLY! We cannot stress this enough, especially as you get closer to the summer months. While we have found this hidden photo spot in Burano, even at the best of times, the island will be busy. Also, if you’re planning on using the water bus/Vaporetto, they do have a limited capacity, and there is usually a wait.

Hot Tip: When we were going from Murano to Burano, they said the wait for the Water Bus/Vaporetto would take 90 minutes, and the lineup was long, but it actually only took 25 minutes! So it may not be a bad idea to wait it out!

Getting to Burano, Italy

The most convenient way to get to Burano is by a water taxi, which can cost you anywhere from €100-150 (one way) to get from Venice to Burano and vice versa.

The other option is to take the Vaporetto (water bus) from Venice to Burano. This is much more affordable! There are several ticketing options that range from €1.50-€3.00. There are also multi-day passes if you are thinking about exploring more of Venice and the surrounding islands.

Hot Tip: We decided to visit Murano before going to Burano. Some Murano glass factories will arrange private transfers and cover the cost of your water taxi to get you to their factory from your hotel. Check with your hotel concierge, as they should be able to help you with this! In our opinion, this is the best way to get to Murano. Once in Murano, then you can take the Vaporetto/Water Bus to Burano and eventually back to Venice.

We strongly recommend taking the water bus/Vaporetto unless you can easily afford a water taxi. But as we mentioned, take the free water taxi to Murano if you can, go on a glass factory tour, and then make your way to Burano (using water bus route 12)!

Where to Take Photos in Burano, Italy?

While most of the photos you see are taken on the main canal in Burano, we found this spot, which was complete with colourful homes, lovely locals, and very few tourists.

A lot fewer people were there than here (on one of the main canals).
